I’ve driven plenty of 3.5-tonne vans, and the Sprinter 314 feels well sorted from a safety point of view. Adaptive ESP and Crosswind Assist come as standard, which matters when the van is tall and the weather turns bad. The blind-spot warning is useful in traffic too. Lane departure warning can get a bit fussy when you pull out around parked cars, but I’d still rather have it than not. It also feels solid on the road, with very little vibration or harshness.

The cabin is one of the better parts of the 314. Plenty of room, decent seats, storage pockets everywhere, and the noise insulation helps on a long shift. Safety equipment is a real plus when you spend all day around busy junctions and loading yards. It also comes in different wheelbase and roof setups, so you can spec it for parcels, tools, or a small mobile workshop. My only mixed feeling: Mercedes parts and workshop bills are not cheap. Some parts can also be hard to get in certain areas.

For long highway runs, the Sprinter 314 is a pretty civil place to spend a shift. At 130km/h there was some wind noise, no surprise there, but the diesel stayed quiet and the cabin did not get that hollow load-area boom thanks to the bulkhead. The revised seats have softer cushioning and better shape, and the upgraded air-con matters when you are climbing in and out all day. I also like the dash-mounted parking brake. Small change, but it frees up space beside the seat.

For a working van, the Sprinter 314 looks like a solid all-rounder. It has good payload ability, a dependable transmission, and it handles both local runs and longer deliveries without drama. The diesel should suit high-mileage work since it combines 300 Nm of torque with sensible consumption. I would still check service history very closely on a used one. Skipping regular maintenance is where expensive problems start, and this is not the kind of van you repair with the cheapest parts you can find.

We’ve got a 314 as a work van / rolling office thing, tools + paperwork + two guys in the cab. Space is the main reason I keep coming back to these. It’s actually laid out like someone thought about the driver. Seats are comfy enough and the safety systems are not just marketing, they do their job.

Engine wise, it’s not fast-fast, but it’s got torque where you need it. You don’t have to floor it to get moving. On longer runs the diesel economy is pretty fair and you’re not hunting for fuel stops all the time.

Downside is the usual: parts and service hit the wallet. And if you’re in a region with weak supply, yeah you can end up waiting. Not fun when the van is your paycheck.
